Culture and The Deejays
The Jamaican vocal trio Culture cut some of its finest work for producer Joe Gibbs and the great engineer Errol ET Thompson, a.k.a. Mighty Two. Besides Two Sevens Clash from 1977, the group also recorded Baldhead Bridge (1978) and More Culture (1981) for the crucial production team.
This compilation out on 17 North Parade assembles several rare Joe Gibbs produced 12" mixes featuring assorted deejay’s of the day, in addition to a few tracks mixed exclusively for this disc.
Amongst the many great tracks you’ll find Two Sevens Clash/Prophesy Reveal with Nicodemus, I’m Not Ashamed with U-Roy, Natty Dread Taking Over with I Roy and See Them A Come/Natty Pass Him G.C.E. with deejay Shorty The General. Most of the tracks are between 5 -8 minutes long and musically supported by the great studio band The Revolutionaries dropping the heavy rockers style, which was the order of the day in the late 1970’s.
In 2003 the South African label Revolver Records released the fine CD Natty Never Get Weary including some of Gibbs production work with Culture from the same period with deejays and dubs, two of them are also featured on this new CD Disco Train and Zion Gate.
Culture and The Deejays at Joe Gibbs 1977- 1979 makes an even greater impact and makes all of us miss both Gibbs, Thompson and Joseph Hill, who all sadly passed away too soon. Luckily we still have their immortal music.
