Mr. Brooks... A Better Tomorrow
Anyone listening to dancehall for the last 5 years, can hardly have missed the phenomenon David Constantine Brooks better known as Mavado. In 2007 released his debut album for VP Records called Gangsta For Life... The Chronicles of David Brooks.
The year is now 2009 and Mavado has moved from hit single to hit single - and the word stardom does not give him enough credit for the impact he has on modern days dancehall. And his sophomore album Mr. Brooks... A Better Tomorrow is definitely what you could expect from a Jamaican artists of his caliber.
Mr. Brooks is a snapshot of dancehall anno 2009, which the producer Stephen McGregor, still a teenager - but a production ability of a veteran in charge of most tracks. The sound is hip-hop with a euro-dance tough mixed with solid dancehall - and not to mention the auto-tuner which Mavado should have his nightly prayers - because it saves him in most situations - but ever so often - it simply can’t help the fact, that Mavado’s vocal range is set to a minimum on more melodic songs. It’s just a shame, that the very first song on the album is one of these melodic tracks.
However, when Mavado spreads his wings out - and voice tunes like So Special, On The Rock, Real Killer, Overcome and Money Changer the earth shakes and the dance floor is filled.
Mavado is still on top of things on Mr. Brooks, and one must admire his will to try out different genres and techniques - some fails, like Every Situation while others like So Blessed seems to work rather good.
