Pass The Torch
With fourteen equally divided tracks between father and son, the late reggae icon Joseph Hill passes on the torch to his son Kenyatta. Joseph died in 2006 during a tour in Europe and this album contains seven previously unreleased songs with this charismatic and long missed reggae singer and seven debut songs with his son. As far as Joseph’s songs are concerned some of them have been out on previous albums, but all of them in different versions.
Songs like Mr. Music, Study Rasta, Pray Them Off and Niabinghi Tonight comes on the new album in a more acoustic feel than the originals, which actually suits them quite well. Even though Kenyatta does is great on tracks like Daddy and Mariwanna it sounds like his voice have not matured yet and though it sometimes might sound similar to the voice of his father, there still seems to be a way to go. Musically the album is backed by such prominent musicians like Sly Dunbar, Danny Browne, Dean Fraser and many more.
In an interview I did with Joseph Hill in 1992 he told me, that he had bought a piece of land in Gambia, whereto he would retire. Unfortunately that day never occurred. May he rest in Zion.
