25.02.08 :: Joe Gibbs Has Passed Away

The legendary producer Joel A. Gibson aka Joe Gibbs passed away last weekend at the age of 65 due to a heart attack. Joe Gibbs was a very productive producer in the 1970's and was the person behind the first stellar releases (Two 77 Clash and Baldhead Bridge) from the band Culture. Gibbs also produced several albums by artists such as Dennis Brown, Frankie Paul, Freddie McGregor, Jacob Miller, The Heptones etc.

He also produced and released the song Someone Loves You Honey by J.C. Lodge which sold a tremendous 500.000 copies in the Netherlands alone.

Prior to his dead, Gibbs made a world wide distribution agreement with VP Records for re-issuing all his releases on vinyl via the new VP sub-label 17 North Parade. Joe Gibbs's son Stephen 'Gibbo' Gibson also has a promising production carreer, and released a few years ago the cool Hard Times rhythm and the Buju Banton feat. Culture single-hit Never Get Weary.

So the spirit lives on in his music and his son. Rest In Peace.

11.02.08 :: Stephen Marleys Picks Up The Grammy

Yesteray, once again, the Grammy Award went to a Marley-family member as Stephen Marley received the Grammy for Best Reggae Album, for the album Mind Control released by Tuff Gong. Ziggy Marley received it last year. We can't help but being a little disapointed of the total lack of feel with new reggae music when we look a the nominees, who all have received a Grammy in the exact same category in previous years. The nominees was:

As in previous years, there has been quite good reggae albums released by new promising artists, who undoubtedly could have been nominated, including Duane Stephenson's From August Town [VP Records], Sizzla's I-Space [Greenleeves], I-Wayne's Book Of Life [VP Records] and least by not limited to, Assassin's Gully Sit'n [VP Records]. We can only hope that the awards will be more updated next time.
